Mark your calendars: The Mega-Regions & Metro-Prosperity conference, billed as a 'New Dialogue About The Future,' will be held in Houston Sept. 24-25 to consider sustainability issues in energy, water, food, greenspace, and transportation. Infrastructure
The Board of the Austin-San Antonio Inter-municipal Commuter Rail District meets this Friday, September 11, 10:00 am at the Embassy Suites Conference Center on IH35 in San Marcos.
San Antonio folks who drive US 281 were a little surprised to find this morning that the stop-and-go roadway was not on TxDOT's list of most congested roads in the Alamo City area. Other spots that made the list: IH 35 near downtown; one segment of I-10, and parts of Loop 1604. Read details here.
The San Antonio Mobility Coalition board of directors meets Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1:30 pm, at the Chamber of Commerce offices downtown. Special guests include Mayor Julian Castro, Henry Munoz, VIA Board of Trustee Chair, and Keith Parker, President & CEO of VIA.
Texans for Safe Reliable Transportation will host a luncheon Honoring Women in the Transportation Industry at 12pm on Wednesday, September 16 at the Sheraton Austin Hotel. Chair, Deirdre Delisi, Texas Transportation Commission will give remarks and Professor, Joseph Giglio, Northeastern University will present the keynote address. Details.
Impacts of the ongoing drought on Austin's Barton Springs pool made news in the New York Times over the weekend (9/6). The Associated Press story notes that the pool - and its salamanders - receives 400,000 visitors a year. Story here.

The Austin and San Antonio Business Journals will host the 2009 Austin-San Antonio Growth Summit on Friday, October 2, from 11:00 am until 1:30 pm at the Embassy Suites San Marcos Hotel, Spa & Convention Center. Details.
The San Antonio Clean Technology Forum is hosting a discussion of San Antonio's nuclear power options with, among others, Mayor Julian Castro and Express-News editor Bob Rivard at the Pearl Stables Sept. 16, 11:30-1:30 pm. Details here.
Austin's high-tech industry, rocked by a series of trends both foreign and domestic, will likely end 2009 with roughly 22,000 fewer jobs than it had at its peak in 2000, according to the American-Statesman. That's a 24% drop, being made up mainly through advances in the software industry. Details

Tarleton State University, Texas A&M University-Central Texas and Temple College have teamed up to create the Central Texas 2-STEP project, part of a national initiative to encourage the pursuit of careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The project came to fruition thanks to a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation.
