Angry words on the Lege: Senator John Carona, saying very publicly what some had been saying privately, blamed Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, and new Speaker Joe Straus for the failure of the Legislative session that ends today at midnight. “If you look at this session, you’ve got two underlying problems: One is simply the lack of leadership in the top offices and the second is the lack of any clear, compelling agenda,” he told the Houston Chronicle over the weekend, calling this session "an embarrassment." He sites political ambition as the core problem. Story here.
And Senator Carona – who is chair of the Senate Transportation Committee - made still more news over the weekend with his threat to filibuster the TxDOT Sunset bill because the 'local option' gas tax measures had been stripped from it. Here is his statement on why the bill is flawed and how he plans to stop it. Statement.
Responding to safety concerns of Guadalupe County officials, TxDOT announced last week that speed limits would be reduced from 70 to 60 mph along State Highway 123 from Geronimo to the Hays County line near San Marcos.
Gov. Rick Perry has appointed real estate professional Ray Wilkerson as chairman of Austin's Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, which is comprised of seven local residents who help steer the authority's toll projects for Williamson and Travis Counties.
After serving as acting mayor since Ken Love stepped down in February, David Begier was sworn in as mayor of Hutto last week.
