The Austin-San Antonio Commuter Rail District Board met Friday (9/7) in San Antonio renewed engineering contracts with Carter-Burgess and A3 Design, got an update on various projects underway, and heard political consultant Chris Shields describe ways to enhance public involvement efforts. Scam to watch out for: A new identity theft scam is afoot wherein you get a call from someone who says they are a 'jury coordinator' and there's an arrest warrant out for you because you've missed a jury duty appointment. The 'coordinator' then asks for your date of birth and social security number so they can clear the matter from your record. Answer and your identity is stolen. Here are details from the FBI website.
Infrastructure
David Hendricks of the San Antonio Express-News suggests that cross-border trucking, scheduled to begin a one year demonstration now that court appeals have been denied, may be doomed anyway. Too bad, because it will be a boon to Austin-San Antonio Corridor logistics and distribution companies. The column covers the back-and-forth debate on the topic and gauges potential outcomes. Another piece of SH 130 opened last week, adding 11 more miles to the road that is eventually planned to span 90 miles from north of Georgetown to Seguin. The latest piece to open runs from U.S. 290 East to SH 71, giving Williamson County and northern Travis County drivers the option to take SH 130 to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
San Antonio's Hope Andrade of the TxDOT Commission will be a keynote speaker for the upcoming Executive Women in Texas Government 21st Annual Professional Development Conference. The conference is Monday, Nov. 19, at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin.
The San Antonio Express-News, in an editorial published this morning, is calling for an increase in the Federal gas tax to solve the nation's infrastructure funding gap. Citing the collapse of the IH-35 bridge in Minneapolis, the paper says raising the gas tax is "the responsible thing to do." Read it here.
Okay developers, this one's for you: Seguin has an old hydroelectric power plant that rests "on one of the most beautiful sites along the Guadalupe River" and is seeking someone to figure out how to adapt it for a modern use. Economic Development
Economic development trade magazine Site Selection names San Antonio's CPS Energy a "Top Utility for 2006," making it the only utility in Texas to receive the designation. The partnership between CPS Energy and the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation assisted in attracting 23 new companies, more than $215 million in capital investment and more than 4,100 jobs in 2006.
Robert H. Sohn has resigned from his position as a member of the New Braunfels Utilities Board of Trustees. Sohn, who also was NBU's general manager for 14 years prior to serving on the Board of Trustees, announced his decision at the board's regular meeting on Thursday.
The proposed Cedar Park Entertainment Center, estimated to cost $45 million is getting ready to take a big step forward. The city's 4A Board has received a proposal from the Dallas Stars to bring the professional hockey team's affiliate farm team, also called the Stars, to Cedar Park. The entertainment complex will open by late 2008.
Gov. Rick Perry named Bill Morrow, the former CEO of Grande Communications Inc., as the new chairman of the Texas Emerging Technology Advisory Committee. Morrow will lead a team of 17 members that will recommend eligible proposals for funding under the state's $200 million Emerging Technology Fund.
Springbrook Corporate Center has broken ground in the city of Pflugerville on a million-sq ft, $50 million industrial development near the intersection of SH 45 and SH 130. This is the city's first large-scale industrial project, and analysts say it could lure more development and jobs which could pave the way for a daytime population in the largely residential city.
