Lago Vista mayor pro-tem Fred Harless is resigning from the Capital Metro and the Austin-San Antonio Commuter Rail District Boards because he is moving to Indiana to be closer to his family. He has been a valuable asset to both bodies:  diligent, shrewd, insightful, and hard-working. He will be truly missed by the staff here and we wish him the best

Infrastructure

TxDOT's summer construction program includes 12 projects for the San Antonio district, covering Comal, Bexar, Guadalupe, Frio, Medina and Wilson Counties. Contracts include $9.5 million to reconfigure Interstate 35 ramps through Bexar County and $4.5 million for a IH 35 corridor traffic management project.

New York City's plan to reduce congestion by charging an $8.00 fee to enter the inner city - mimicking similar successful programs in London and Stockholm - is moving through the state legislature there and may help NYC collect up to $500 million in additional Federal funding (story here:), but not without some dissent from non-residents (story here:).

Isidro (Sid) Martinez was officially named as the Director of the San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). He had served as the interim director since December 2005, when he replaced Joanne Walsh.

A 'Kick-Off' meeting for the State Highway 45 Southeast (SH 45 SE) project is scheduled for 6/18 @ 10:00 a.m. at the Texas Department of Transportation, South Travis/Hays County. Area Office, 9725 S. I-35, Austin. For additional information and/or to RSVP, please contact the SH 45 SE project office at 512-225-1473.

Temple hopes to use new legislation to “build out” a section of Northwest Loop 363 beyond what is being funded by TxDOT as a four-lane bypass of IH-35.  The measure, awaiting Gov. Perry's signature, allows cities to issue bonds for construction, improvement and related expenses associated with work on state roads and lets cities to pledge, levy and collect taxes or a combination of revenue and taxes to back the bonds.  Details here

The San Antonio Mobility Coalition Board meets next Monday, June 18, 1:30-3:00 pm at the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, McDermott Briefing Center (602 E Commerce).

 Economic Development

San Antonio Water System is drafting plans for a possible $150 million desalination project. Water produced from a desalination plant could be used to augment water drawn from the Edwards Aquifer - the region's primary source of drinking water – when peak demand is high.

Austin ranked seventh in the nation - tying with Houston and Denver - in a study of areas with the highest concentration of nanotechnology companies, universities, research laboratories and organizations. Texas placed third among the 50 states, behind California, Massachusetts and New York, according to the study by the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies.

NewQuest Properties Inc. has secured the necessary approvals for a major New Braunfels Town Center at Creekside, which will go up on the north east corner of I-35 and FM 306. New Braunfels, with its prime position between the boomtowns of Austin and San Antonio, is an ideal site for a 400-acre mixed-use project including retail and senior living, said officials.

Whole Foods Market, the Austin-born organic and natural food grocery-store chain, has opened its first supermarket in Europe; the 80,000 sq. ft. shop in London marks a major step in expanding its brand beyond North America.

Randall Stephenson officially succeeded Edward E. Whitacre Jr. as chairman and CEO of San Antonio’s AT&T Inc. - ushering in a new generation of leadership for one the world's largest telecommunications companies. Stephenson, 47, took the reigns on June 3 after Whitacre retired from both positions.

Dell Inc. unveiled a company plan to become "the greenest technology company on Earth for the long-term." The Round Rock-based commuter giant says through its "Zero Carbon Initiative," it will make its products more energy efficient, aiming to reduce its factories' carbon emissions by 15% over the next five years. They've asked their main suppliers to start reporting greenhouse gas emissions and might reduce orders from those who don't comply.

Grocery retailer H.E.Butt Grocery Co. opened the doors of its 150,000-sq. ft. H-E-B Plus at the intersection of FM 1626 and I-35 in Kyle on Friday, June 8th. San Antonio-based H-E-B had been looking into the Kyle area since 2002.
