Please RSVP to jeffwebb@thecorridor.org Infrastructure Now that the smoke is clearing from the recently-ended Legislative session it is becoming clear that the so-called 'moratorium' bill on toll roads really isn't much of a moratorium at all - with the possible exception of some delay's on San Antonio's 281 project, and even the Alamo RMA's chairman isn't too upset about that. Here are some thoughts from Ben Wear and Pat Driscoll. In May 2007, the Urban Land Institute and Ernst & Young LLP released a report which said that there is an “emerging crisis” in American infrastructure and that the U.S. faces a $1.6 trillion deficit in infrastructure spending. The report said the U.S. spends less than 1% of its GDP on infrastructure. For comparison, China spends 9 percent and India spends 3.5 percent. Trade using surface transportation between the US and its NAFTA partners Canada and Mexico was 2.3 percent higher in March 2007 than in March 2006, reaching $69.8 billion, the highest monthly level ever recorded, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. More here. Freight data and data from previous months are posted on the BTS website here. TXDOT Executive Director Mike Behrens has announced his retirement effective August 31, 2007. Behrens became executive director Sept. 1, 2001 and was responsible for managing, directing, and implementing TxDOT policies, programs, and strategies. Economic Development Redevelopment of the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport in Austin is in high gear and the project's master developer is looking for additional contractors to handle a multitude of ongoing work. Catellus Development Group will host its Mueller Summer Contractor Fair on June 6 from 4-7 pm. Catellius is targeting small, minority and women-owned subcontractors. The fair will take place at Mueller Central, 4550 Mueller Blvd. off Airport just east of I-35. Conde Nast Traveler readers named San Antonio's Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa as the best golf course in Texas and one of the top worldwide. Out of 100 of the favorite golf destinations worldwide, the local golf course ranked 17th worldwide. San Antonio's Westin La Cantera ranked 41st and Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin ranked 50th. Today, Express Jet will begin various nonstop flights from Austin. The new routes are the eighth and ninth planned nonstop flights the airline will fly from Austin. Express Jet first entered the Austin market in April, when it started service to Los Angeles. Cedar Park is starting a new project to give businesses along the U.S. 183 corridor a facelift. All Cedar Park businesses along the 183 corridor are eligible to apply for the The U.S. 183 Corridor Enhancement Project, which funds qualified applicants up to $50,000 to make improvements to the business focused on safety, mobility or aesthetics. Central Texas Medical Center opened the newest part of its San Marcos hospital on May 31st., a newly expanded and remodeled emergency room lobby. The 113-bed CTMC is part of the Adventist Health System. While it is currently Hays County's only full-service hospital, Seton Family of Hospitals plans to build a 210-bed hospital by 2020 in Kyle, in between San Marcos and Austin.
